How to Register on SAM.gov: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

BidTrackPro Team·March 20, 2026

SAM.gov (System for Award Management) registration is required before you can bid on or receive any federal contract. Registration is free and takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. Here's exactly how to do it.

Before You Start

Gather these items: - DUNS/UEI Number — Your Unique Entity Identifier (now assigned by SAM.gov) - EIN (Tax ID Number) — From the IRS - Business bank account info — For electronic payment setup - NAICS codes — Industry classification codes that describe your work - Business address — Must match your tax records

Step 1: Create a Login.gov Account

Go to login.gov and create an account. This is the authentication system used by SAM.gov and many other government websites. You'll need a valid email address and phone number.

Step 2: Go to SAM.gov

Navigate to sam.gov and click "Get Started" under Entity Registration. Sign in with your Login.gov credentials.

Step 3: Get Your UEI

If you don't have a Unique Entity Identifier, SAM.gov will assign one during registration. This replaces the old DUNS number system.

Step 4: Complete Core Data

Fill in your business information: - Legal business name (must match IRS records) - Physical address - Business start date - Entity type (LLC, Corporation, Sole Proprietor, etc.) - Congressional district

Step 5: Select NAICS Codes

Choose the NAICS codes that describe your services. Common codes for contractors: - 238220 — Plumbing, Heating, and Air-Conditioning - 238210 — Electrical Contractors - 236220 — Commercial Building Construction - 561720 — Janitorial Services - 541512 — Computer Systems Design

Step 6: Financial Information

Enter your banking details for electronic funds transfer (EFT). This is how the government will pay you.

Step 7: Representations and Certifications

Complete the required certifications about your business size, ownership, and compliance with federal regulations.

Step 8: Submit and Wait

After submission, SAM.gov validates your information with IRS records. This typically takes 7-10 business days. You'll receive an email when your registration is active.

Important Notes

  • Registration is FREE — Never pay anyone for SAM.gov registration
  • Renewal required annually — Set a calendar reminder
  • Keep information current — Update within 30 days of any changes
  • Multiple NAICS codes — List all services you provide
